**Development of a Paint for the Bottom of Iron Drums**

China's export packaging iron drums have long faced issues such as leakage, rusting, fouling, and peeling. At the beginning of this year, our factory was entrusted by China's Packaging Import and Export Company to develop a new type of coating for iron drums. After two years of research and testing, we successfully developed an 8104 bottom paint with excellent anti-rust properties, a high level of decorative appearance, and wide applicability. Mass production trials began at the start of this year, and more than 60 tons of various colored 8104 paints have already been produced for use at Yujia Co., Ltd.
In June this year, the Packaging Import and Export Corporation conducted a technical appraisal of the paint in Hangzhou. They concluded that the paint offers dual advantages: primer rust prevention and topcoat decoration—something conventional paints cannot achieve. This innovation fills a gap in the domestic market for specialized coatings for iron drums. In terms of exposure performance, 8104 paint not only meets but also exceeds certain types of Japanese and British paints. It features a bright, long-lasting color, a smooth and fresh paint film, strong adhesion, good wear resistance, and excellent corrosion resistance. Compared to traditional phenolic-based paints used in iron drums, the service life of 8104 paint is two to three times longer, lasting between 1.5 to 4 years.
The composition of 8104 paint includes epoxy-modified synthetic resins as the main binder, along with light stabilizers, special anti-rust pigments, coloring agents, multi-purpose additives, driers, and solvents. It is a room temperature self-drying and fast-drying paint. The test route involved selecting raw materials, designing formulations, and comparing performance with domestic and foreign products. User tests confirmed its effectiveness, with positive feedback from customers both domestically and internationally.
Performance comparisons under natural exposure and artificial aging showed that 8104 paint maintains high gloss retention and excellent weather resistance. Its storage stability was also confirmed after one year of testing. The product quality specifications include color matching, smooth surface, viscosity control, drying time, adhesion, flexibility, impact resistance, and saltwater resistance. Overall, 8104 paint represents a significant advancement in iron drum coating technology, offering improved durability, aesthetics, and functionality.
