Development of a Paint for the Bottom of Iron Drums

China's export packaging iron drums have long suffered from issues such as leakage, rust, contamination, and peeling. At the beginning of this year, our factory was commissioned by a Chinese packaging import and export company to develop a new coating for iron drums. After two years of research and testing, we successfully developed an 8104 bottom paint that offers excellent anti-rust properties, high decorative appeal, and wide applicability. This year, mass production trials began, and so far over 60 tons of various colored 8104 paints have been produced for use at Yujia Co., Ltd. In early June, the Packaging Import and Export Corporation conducted a technical evaluation of the paint in Hangzhou. They concluded that the paint combines the functions of a primer and topcoat, surpassing conventional coatings and filling a gap in domestic specialty coatings for iron drums. The performance of 8104 paint exceeds certain types of Japanese and British paints in terms of exposure resistance. It has a good appearance, bright colors, a fresh-looking film, strong adhesion, excellent wear resistance, and is resistant to corrosion, peeling, and rust. Compared to traditional phenolic-based paints used in iron drums, which last between 1.5 to 4 years, the service life of 8104 paint is more than 2 to 3 times longer.
The composition, test process, performance comparison with domestic and foreign products, user test results, and product quality specifications of 8104 paint are as follows:
One, Composition of 8104 Paint
8104 lacquer is made using epoxy-modified synthetic resin as the main binder, combined with light stabilizers, special anti-rust pigments, coloring agents, multi-purpose additives, dryers, and solvents. It is a room temperature self-drying and quick-drying paint prepared through grinding.
Two, Test Procedure
1. Selection of Raw Materials
a. Pigment – Anti-rust pigments such as bismuth diphenylamine and zinc phosphate were selected to ensure both high rust resistance and aesthetic qualities for the topcoat.
b. Resin – Epoxy-modified alkyd and phenolic resins were chosen as the main binders to meet the requirements of organic coatings and iron drum packaging. Medium molecular weight epoxy resins with moderate softening points were used.
c. Additives – High-efficiency corrosion inhibitors such as N-octadecyl sarcosine amine salt were added. A hindered amine light stabilizer, tri (1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) phosphite, was also included. Other additives include Byk-300 and 201 methyl wow oil.
2. Formulation Design
The formulation of the 8104 paint was carefully designed to achieve strong adhesion, good gloss, weather resistance, fast drying, and impact resistance. The ratio of epoxy, phenolic, and alkyd resins was found to be approximately 3:10:15. Anti-rust pigments account for 7–10% of the total formula, while the pigment volume concentration ranges from 15% to 18%. To enhance rust protection, a new high-efficiency anti-rust agent was incorporated. Considering the incomplete surface treatment of iron drums before painting, appropriate auxiliary agents were added to improve the appearance, physical, and chemical properties of the paint film. The total amount of additives was kept within 3% of the paint’s weight. Experiments showed that this formulation met all development goals, achieving uniform rust prevention and high-quality appearance.
Three, Performance Comparison Between Domestic and Foreign Products
To verify the quality of the paint, it was compared with related products from both domestic and international sources.
Natural Exposure
Observations from natural exposure tests showed that 8104 lacquer has excellent weather resistance and gloss retention, along with some rust prevention capabilities. For example, in the case of medium yellow and grass green:

From the data, it can be seen that the original gloss of 8104 paint is higher, and the loss after natural exposure is smaller. The grass green paint retains its luster well even after prolonged sun exposure.
2. Artificial Aging
When comparing 8104 paint with domestic and foreign alkyd paints, black and grass green samples were tested. The results show that 8104 outperforms others in gloss retention.

The aging performance of 8104 paint is significantly better than other lacquers. Alkyd paints show the highest rate of gloss fading, almost disappearing after 340 hours. Phenolic paints also degrade quickly, with low gloss levels later on. In contrast, 8104 maintains the lowest gloss decay rate and the highest original gloss, resulting in superior gloss retention.
3. Storage Stability
After one year of storage stability testing, the paint remained stable, with no significant increase in viscosity or changes in quality.
Four, User Test Results
After one year and three months of natural exposure testing at the Changzhou Packaging Container Factory, Hailan paint showed only slight rusting on the edges due to water accumulation, while the rest of the coating remained intact. Similarly, after six months of outdoor exposure, the dark green paint maintained its color tone well. At Jiangsu Shazhou Leyu Barrel Factory, 10 tons of 8104 paint were used in comparison with the original paint, resulting in improved gloss and wear resistance. Even during the mildew season, the paint film dried properly and was well-received by foreign clients. Shanghai Hao Machinery Co., Ltd. compared 8104 paint with Romanian alkyd paint and found that 8104 performed better in drying speed, light resistance, moisture resistance, and adhesion.
Five, Product Quality Specifications
8104 paint can be directly applied to cold-rolled and hot-rolled steel sheets. After 24 hours of drying, the following quality standards apply:

Note: The salt water resistance index and film thickness should be measured at 42 ± 3 microns, after drying for 72 hours.
