Review: the GORUCK face mask

In Texas, finding good-quality reusable cloth masks has been a challenge. My wife ordered fancy-looking ones from Canada over a month ago, and they're still sitting on the shipping dock. I recently waited three weeks for some pricey masks that disintegrated the moment I tried them. Fortunately, more clothing brands are launching their own mask collections. GORUCK is the latest to join the fray, and their masks are currently in stock. After using these masks for a week—both for myself and my family—I can sum up my experience: The GORUCK masks are incredibly comfortable to wear for extended periods. Their build quality is top-notch compared to other reusable masks, and they offer a sleek, minimalist design. While they don't filter as effectively as a proper N95 mask, they fit snugly over the nose and mouth, making them suitable for most everyday situations. When I'm outside around crowds or in large, well-ventilated spaces, I opt for the GORUCK masks. However, if I know I'll be in a cramped, indoor environment for an extended period, I'll stick with an N95. My kids love these masks—they call them "little ninja masks," which makes it easier to convince them to wear them. At $45 for a three-pack, they're reasonably priced compared to many inferior options available online. Plus, for every mask purchased, GORUCK donates N95s to those in need. I liked them so much that I bought two additional three-packs myself. --- GORUCK's masks have a sleek, minimalist design that avoids the bulky, oversized look of some other masks. This matters because if people are expected to wear them daily, they should at least feel stylish. The mask comes in a three-pack, and while the gaps around the nose could be improved, they still perform well for most outdoor scenarios. [Image description: A photo of someone wearing the GORUCK mask, looking casual yet professional.] My wife prefers masks that loop around the ears rather than tying behind the head, as the ties can tangle with longer hair. To solve this, I plan to buy some cord locks to convert the ties to ear loops. Personally, I like the behind-the-head ties because they allow me to easily remove the mask and let it hang from my neck when I don’t need it. The mask is made of a dual-layered fabric: a smooth outer layer and a softer inner layer. These layers are combined into a single pocket that can hold a filter insert. The nylon/polyester/spandex blend feels lightweight and breathable, and the mask stretches slightly to fit snugly over your face. The mask’s moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties make it far more comfortable than standard N95 masks, which tend to become damp and uncomfortable after a short time. While the GORUCK mask stays dry and breathable, there’s one issue I've encountered: the thin wire embedded in the nose bridge isn’t stiff enough to create a perfect seal. As a result, there’s often a slight gap along the sides of the nose, allowing air to escape. To compensate for this, I’ve developed a workaround: I purse my lips and breathe through my mouth, creating a makeshift seal. It works temporarily, but it’s not ideal for prolonged use. I’ll continue experimenting with different filter materials to see if I can improve the overall performance. --- Overall, I’m impressed with the GORUCK masks. Their comfort, durability, and stylish design make them a great option for daily use. While they don’t match the filtration efficiency of an N95, they’re far superior to many other reusable masks on the market. I’ve already added several to my family’s emergency kit, and I’ll likely keep using them regularly. [Image description: A photo of the GORUCK mask laid flat, showing the filter pocket and ties.] I’m fortunate to have access to a stash of N95s for high-risk situations, but for everyday wear, especially in Texas’ sweltering heat, the GORUCK masks are a game-changer. They stay cool and comfortable, and the moisture-wicking fabric prevents my face from getting sweaty. I’d recommend these masks to anyone looking for a practical, stylish alternative to disposable options. If you’re concerned about air gaps, consider experimenting with different filter inserts or adjusting the fit. For now, I’ll continue using these masks for outdoor activities and save my N95s for indoor environments.
