Three Effective Ways to Place Samples in a Salt Spray Test Chamber

When conducting salt spray testing, the arrangement of samples inside the test chamber is crucial. This type of testing is commonly used for metal products, ranging from small components like screws and nuts to larger metallic objects. There are three standard methods for positioning samples in a salt spray test chamber: using a round rod, a V-shaped sample holder, or placing them directly on the bottom of the chamber. Each method is designed to accommodate different types of samples and ensure even exposure to the corrosive environment.

1. Using a Round Rod for Sample Placement

The round rod is typically made of stainless steel and coated with PVC for corrosion resistance. It is ideal for testing sheet-like samples. For smaller parts, such as screws or nuts, you can hang them using a nylon rope onto the round rod. This method ensures that the samples are evenly exposed to the salt mist and prevents direct contact with the chamber walls, which could interfere with the test results.

2. Utilizing a V-Shaped Sample Holder

The V-shaped sample holder is constructed from PP (polypropylene) material and allows for adjustable angles—usually 15° or 30°. The test sample is placed on the V-shaped holder, which is then tilted at the desired angle relative to the round rod. This setup helps simulate real-world conditions where surfaces may be positioned at different angles. Users can adjust the angle based on their specific testing requirements.

3. Placing Large Samples on the Chamber Base

If the sample is large or weighs more than 15 kg, it can be placed directly on the bottom of the chamber. However, due to the presence of water at the base, it's important to place a support structure, such as a stake or a PVC plate, beneath the sample. This prevents direct contact with moisture and ensures stability during the test. A corrosion-resistant bracket should also be used to avoid damage from prolonged exposure to salt mist.

It’s important to note that the standard load capacity of most salt spray test chambers is around 30 kg.
