China's inkjet printer industry will usher in its own spring

The development of China's inkjet printer industry can be traced back to the late 1980s when French company Macon-Imaje first entered the Chinese market. This was followed by U.S.-based Videojet, British Domino, and other international players such as Germany’s InkJet and Japan’s Hitachi. These global companies gradually expanded their operations in China, setting up local offices and even establishing production facilities. The openness of China’s market allowed these foreign firms to grow rapidly, laying a strong foundation for the industry. With the establishment of advanced computerized inkjet printing systems—covering production, sales, and after-sales services—these printers became essential equipment in industries like food, pharmaceuticals, beer, and beverages. Over time, the technology improved significantly, with modern models now featuring full-screen Chinese displays and software tailored to Chinese culture, making them more user-friendly for local operators. As China's economy continued to grow, the inkjet printer industry experienced its own boom. However, despite this growth, the domestic market remains largely dominated by foreign brands. Reports indicate that foreign inkjet printer brands hold over 80% of the market share, while domestic brands account for only around 20%. This highlights the challenge faced by local manufacturers in competing with established international players. In response, some domestic companies are focusing on developing new, locally suitable products. These efforts are primarily concentrated in fast-moving consumer goods sectors such as food, medicine, beverages, and mineral water. They are also expanding into areas like wire and cable, cigarettes, small snacks, and batteries. Beyond just marking dates, these printers can help track product issues and prevent counterfeiting, making them indispensable in the food industry. Currently, inkjet printers are mainly divided into two categories: inkjet and laser printers. Inkjet printers were developed earlier and are more cost-effective, still dominating the market. They come in various types based on technology (continuous or drop-on-demand), font size (small or large), printing speed (ultra-high, high, standard, or slow), and power source (external air supply or internal pump). Laser inkjet printers have recently emerged as a new trend, offering an effective anti-counterfeiting solution due to their permanent markings. Since fake products often lack laser coding, they can be easily identified, giving laser printers an edge in security applications. Despite these advancements, the domestic inkjet printer industry still faces challenges. Most local companies are small in scale and struggle to compete with well-established foreign firms. In addition to price competition, they lack other competitive advantages. As global competition intensifies, the question remains: how can domestic manufacturers innovate and grow? Product quality, maintenance ease, fast printing speeds, clear content display, and simple operation are key issues that all global inkjet printer companies must address. In response to China's massive market potential, major international companies are also paying close attention to cultural adaptation. Making software interfaces, touchscreens, and operations more intuitive and user-friendly is crucial for successful localization. Those who can solve these challenges effectively will be able to accelerate their growth in the Chinese market.
