Google invests $600,000 to sponsor a nonprofit organization e-Nable 3D printed prosthesis

Google has recently made a significant investment of $20 million into its charitable arm, Google.org, to support non-profit organizations that leverage technology in innovative ways to help people with disabilities live more independently. This initiative is part of a broader effort to empower the disabled community through technological advancements and creative problem-solving. On Tuesday, Google.org launched a new public initiative called the Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities. The goal of this challenge is to identify and support non-profits that are developing cutting-edge solutions for people with disabilities. According to the official blog post, "We will look for the most promising ideas, provide funding, and mobilize our people and resources to help them achieve their goals." One of the key recipients of this support is e-NABLE, a nonprofit organization that specializes in 3D-printed prosthetics. e-NABLE has received a $600,000 grant from Google.org to further develop open-source 3D-printed prosthetics and expand access to affordable solutions. For many children with upper limb disabilities, traditional prosthetics have been too expensive and not suitable due to rapid growth. Since its founding in 2013, e-NABLE has focused on creating low-cost, customizable 3D-printed prosthetics using open-source designs and community collaboration. To date, the organization has provided hundreds of prosthetics and continues to push the boundaries of what's possible with 3D printing. Jon Schull, president of the e-NABLE Community Foundation and a researcher at the Rochester Institute of Technology, said, "We believe that the products and practices of the e-NABLE community can serve as a model for other companies looking to use emerging technologies to support vulnerable populations." He added, "Google.org has asked us to test this idea and provided the resources to do so, which allows us to continue serving as both volunteers and recipients." With the new funding, e-NABLE plans to accelerate the development of 3D-printed prosthetics through strategic partnerships and global design challenges. The organization will also continue to develop free, open-source software like Handomatic, aiming to make prosthetic solutions even more accessible and affordable. The director of e-NABLE shared, “Thanks to the unprecedented access to knowledge, technology, and problem-solvers, we now have new opportunities to create, share, and spread solutions to complex challenges.” He emphasized that the e-NABLE community has grown significantly over the past two years, bringing real-world benefits to many individuals with disabilities. With the direct support of Google.org, the organization is now able to do even more.
