Google invests $600,000 to sponsor a nonprofit organization e-Nable 3D printed prosthesis

Google Inc. has recently made a significant investment of $20 million into its charitable arm, Google.org, to support non-profit organizations that leverage cutting-edge technology in helping people with disabilities live more independently. This initiative is part of the Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities, an effort launched by Google.org to identify and back innovative solutions tailored for the disabled community. Through this challenge, Google.org aims to discover impactful ideas and provide them with funding, along with access to Google’s vast resources and expertise. The goal is to empower these organizations to turn their visions into reality. One such organization benefiting from this initiative is e-NABLE, a nonprofit that specializes in creating 3D-printed prosthetics for individuals with limb differences. e-NABLE has just received a $600,000 grant from Google.org to further advance the development of open-source 3D-printed prosthetics. This support will help the organization scale its efforts and continue innovating low-cost, accessible solutions for those in need. For many children with upper limb disabilities, affordable prosthetics have historically been hard to come by due to high costs and rapid growth. Since its founding in 2013, e-NABLE has focused on using open-source designs, crowdsourcing, and mass customization to create cost-effective 3D-printed prosthetics for both adults and children. To date, they've produced hundreds of prosthetics and are continuously improving their technology. Jon Schull, president of the e-NABLE Community Foundation and researcher at the Rochester Institute of Technology, emphasized the potential of e-NABLE’s work as a model for other companies. “We believe that the products and practices of the e-NABLE community can inspire digital humanitarians to use emerging technologies to develop innovative solutions for vulnerable populations,” he said. “Google.org has given us the opportunity to test this idea and provided the resources needed to move forward.” With the new funding, e-NABLE plans to accelerate the development of 3D-printed prosthetics through partnerships and global design challenges. They will also continue to develop free, open-source software like Handomatic, which helps users create custom prosthetics at home. This initiative aims to make prosthetic solutions more accessible and affordable worldwide. The e-NABLE team is excited about the future. As one of the directors noted, “With the unprecedented access we now have to knowledge, technology, and problem-solvers, we’re able to develop, share, and spread new solutions to some of the toughest challenges.” Over the past two years, the e-NABLE community has grown significantly, bringing real benefits to many people with disabilities.
