[China Packaging Network News] In a major breakthrough for Chinese packaging design, Nongfu Spring's New Mineral Water has taken first place in the non-alcoholic beverage category at the 2015 Dieline International Packaging Design Awards. This marks the first time a Chinese brand has won the top prize in this prestigious global competition, which has traditionally been dominated by Western companies.
The Dieline Awards are among the most respected in the packaging industry, recognizing excellence in design across various categories such as beverages, snacks, and alcoholic drinks. Each year, thousands of entries are reviewed by an elite panel of international packaging designers, who evaluate the work based on innovation, market feasibility, structural design, and brand impact.
Nongfu Spring’s winning package was praised for its strong connection to the ecological identity of Changbai Mountain, where the water is sourced. The bottle's design features a drop-like shape that evokes the image of falling water, symbolizing purity and natural beauty. The overall presentation effectively communicates the product's quality and uniqueness, while also being visually striking and innovative.
According to Zhou Li, a spokesperson for Nongfu Spring, the development of this packaging took three years and involved over 58 design iterations. More than 300 concepts were explored before the final designs were chosen. The company worked closely with the design firm "Horse Design" throughout the process, ensuring full control over every detail.
Unlike traditional design projects, Nongfu Spring actively participated in the creative process, providing designers with visual references and even suggesting color schemes for the illustrations. Zhou emphasized that few companies invest so much effort into packaging, but he believes that if a company neglects its packaging, it cannot be considered truly committed to quality.
The product comes in eight different packaging variations. Four of them feature transparent designs that showcase typical elements of Changbai Mountain, including snowflakes, sea buckthorn, ferns, and red pine cones—used for non-carbonated natural mineral water. The other four use a green theme to represent carbonated mineral water, featuring animals like Siberian tigers, mergansers, red deer, and cormorants.
Sourced from Moya Spring at the base of Changbai Mountain, the water is a low-sodium, light mineral spring. It contains a significant amount of silicic acid and has a sodium content of only 4mg/L, along with a TDS level below 100, making it a rare and high-quality natural mineral water.
