British plan to reduce bottle packaging wine this year

The project known as "GlassRite Beer, Wine, and Spirits" will investigate the lightweight technology, economics, and market conditions of glass. Top brand manufacturers, bottle makers, retailers, and technical experts are teaming up with the UK's WRAP (Waste Abandonment and Recycling Action Project) to explore ways to effectively reduce the use of glass packaging for beer, wine, and spirits. The goal is until 2008. In March of this year, the use of 20,000 tons of glass was reduced.

Some well-known manufacturers have already participated in this project. Existing brewers include: Scottish & Newcastle, Anheuser Busch (AB), Coors UK and SAB Miller (Miller); spirit producers Whyte & MacKay and light beer manufacturer Hall & Woodhouse and Fullers and Robinsons.

As a complete supply chain, the project also includes supermarket chains such as Morrisons and major UK glass packaging manufacturers such as Allied Glass, Beatson Clark, Quinn Glass, Rockware and OI.

In addition, the project was supported by the British Federation of Glass Manufacturers led by the Glass Technology Service Association (GTS), the British Beer and Bar Association, the Vinegar and Vodka Wine Association, and the Scotch Whisky Association.

RAP project manager Nicola Jenkin said: "Our research shows that if each glass container used in the UK is reduced by 1/10, it will reduce the emissions of glass by 250,000 tons and 180,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Alcoholic beverage bottles account for a considerable amount. Because of the weight, the potential of this project is huge."

The "GlassRite beer, wine, and spirits" project is the UK's three GlassRite projects. Other projects include: GlassRite Foods, Soft Drinks and Seasoned Alcoholic Beverages, and Glass Rite Wines, each optimised for packaging through the industry chain. The goal of the entire GlassRite project is to reduce glass packaging by 60,000 tons by March 2008.

This project is actually a follow-up project to the successful ContainerLite project before WRAP. That project has demonstrated that glass packaging can significantly reduce weight without compromising packaging strength and maintaining brand integrity. As a direct result, the brewer Adnams successfully reduced the bottle weight of its three light beers, Adnams Bitter, Explorer and Broadside, by 34%, and received two industrial awards.
