Display calibration and characterization

In the printing color management system, in order to establish a consistent color environment, the basic equipment used to observe the color, that is, the display, is first corrected, which is one of the most important links in the entire printing color management system. Display calibration is achieved using professional calibration and characterization software (such as profilemaker) and associated measuring instruments (such as eye-one).

1 Display calibration parameter settings

Turn on the monitor for 30 minutes, turn off the strong light around, turn off the system power management, and turn off the screen saver. After launching the ProfileMaker software, select the MONITOR display option.

Choose the type of monitor you are using, CRT or LCD, choose your measurement equipment, profilemaker software supports eye-one, spectrolino and other instruments, we use eye-one pro, then the software requires the meter to be placed on its base On the standard white point, the standard white of the calibration instrument.

Select OK, the software will prompt you to perform the monitor calibration function, select Yes, the software will start the MeasureTool monitor measurement function. The first interface is to set the target value of the white point, gamma value, brightness and other parameters of the display.

First, set the white point, which is the color temperature of the display. In general, the target value of the display color temperature will be 5000K or 6500K, because China's printing standard uses a light source of 6500K, but the international standard is 5000K. How many Ks to choose here depends on the actual printed light source.

Set the GAMMA value, pc recommends 2.2, and MAC uses 1.8.

The brightness is recommended to be 100%.

The type of display selects the display you are using.

2 adjustment process of display calibration parameters

After the target value is set, click Next to enter the parameter adjustment. At this time, the measuring instrument must be used, and the software will prompt to fix the measuring instrument on the display.

The first is the contrast adjustment. First adjust the monitor contrast to the maximum, then click Start, then slowly adjust the contrast until the up and down arrows are aligned.

Then adjust the brightness, first adjust the brightness of the display to a minimum, then gradually increase the brightness until the up and down arrows are aligned.

Here, unstable displays are difficult to accurately align the brightness, and the brightness will move back and forth indefinitely. Carefully adjust to ensure that the arrows are as close as possible.

White point color temperature adjustment. Adjust the RGB values of the display separately, and align the three color arrows as much as possible. If it is really difficult to align, a green check mark can also be used. If you adjust to the maximum or minimum value and still can not meet the color temperature requirements, then your display is too aging, it should be changed.

3 display characterization process

When the contrast, brightness, color temperature, and gamma value of the display are adjusted to meet the requirements, proceed to the next step. This step is the characterization process of the display, the software will automatically give 42 standard color blocks in turn, the RGB values of these color blocks are given; and these color blocks are measured by using the measuring instrument eye-one fixed on the display. The spectral reflectance is obtained to obtain the LAB values of these patches. This step is very important, is the measurement data necessary to generate the display icc file. After the automatic measurement is completed, you will be prompted to save the measurement data. After saving the measurement data, the software will jump back to the ProfileMaker interface and load the data just measured.

When generating an icc file, the profile size option suggests choosing to generate a larger ICC file, which is more accurate; paper white selects the standard white point (that is, the white point you just set). Then click Start Calculation to generate the icc file.

4 application of the characterization file of the display

After saving the ICC file, the software will prompt you whether to use the generated icc file as the configuration file of the display system. If you choose Yes, it will automatically load this ICC as your monitor print color management file, which can be set from the monitor / Advanced / Print Color management is viewed.
