As the 17th architect to take on the Serpentine Gallery’s annual challenge, Kéré has once again pushed the boundaries of contemporary architecture. Since its inception in 2000, the Serpentine Pavilion has become a global platform for creative expression, drawing attention from designers and enthusiasts around the world.
Kéré drew inspiration from the communal tree in his hometown, using it as a symbol of gathering and connection. His design aims to bring people closer to nature and each OTHER, creating a space that is both functional and deeply meaningful.
The pavilion features a large, open roof supported by a central steel framework, allowing for natural ventilation and protection from the British weather. Four entry points make the space accessible and inviting, encouraging exploration and interaction.
At the heart of the pavilion is an open-air courtyard where visitors can gather, relax, and connect. On rainy days, water collected from the roof is channeled through an oculus, creating a beautiful waterfall effect that adds a magical touch to the space.
By night, the pavilion transforms into a glowing beacon of creativity. Perforated walls create the illusion of movement and activity inside, inspired by the traditional celebrations in Kéré’s hometown, where people would gather under the light of a tree.
