As the 17th architect to take on the Serpentine Gallery's annual challenge, Kéré joined a long list of architectural greats who have transformed the Kensington Gardens into a temporary canvas for creative expression. Since its inception in 2000, the Serpentine Pavilion has become one of the most anticipated events in the global design calendar, drawing attention from architects, designers, and art lovers around the world.
Kéré drew inspiration from the communal tree in his hometown of Gando, which serves as a gathering place for the local community. His design aims to recreate that sense of connection—bringing people together under a shared roof while embracing the natural elements around them.
The structure features a large, open roof supported by a central steel framework, allowing for natural ventilation and protection from the British weather. With four distinct entrances, the pavilion encourages movement and interaction, making it a dynamic space for visitors.
At the heart of the pavilion lies an open-air courtyard designed for relaxation and socializing. On rainy days, an oculus at the top of the roof channels rainwater into a stunning waterfall, transforming the space into a magical environment that reflects Kéré’s deep respect for nature.
At night, the pavilion takes on a new life. Perforated walls allow light to filter through, creating the illusion of movement and activity inside. This design element was inspired by the traditions of Kéré’s home village, where people would gather at night to seek out the nearest source of light, often climbing trees to find the best view.
