Shenyang: A Post-Holiday Fitness Surge – March 13, 2015 9:32 AM
As the old saying goes, “Every holiday adds three pounds.†Did you fall into that trap after the Spring Festival?
Recently, Shenyang’s gyms and sports stores have seen a surge in customers, all with one goal: to lose weight. During a recent visit, reporters noticed that savvy businesses are capitalizing on the post-holiday fitness craze, offering attractive deals to attract customers.
However, industry experts remind the public that while the desire to slim down is understandable, it's best done under the guidance of professional trainers.
Lunchtime Workouts
After the Spring Festival, many people have suddenly lost five pounds, making their old pants too tight. Liu Haitao, a regular at a local gym, joked with reporters about the situation.
During the visit, the reporter found that many people suffer from post-holiday syndrome—weight gain, fatigue, and insomnia were common. As a result, more people are turning to fitness to break bad habits. In several gyms across Shenyang, many individuals are taking time off during lunch breaks, mostly young professionals. A gym manager told the reporter that after the Spring Festival, the gym sees a daily rush at noon, with most visitors being office workers.
While some focus on equipment-based workouts, others are enjoying leisure activities like table tennis and billiards, which have also gained popularity.
Boost in Fitness Product Sales
The post-holiday fitness trend isn't just limited to gyms. Sports equipment sales have skyrocketed. In shopping malls and supermarkets, treadmills, spinning bikes, dumbbells, and other fitness gear are on display, with prices ranging from tens to thousands of yuan.
At one mall, Ms. Zhao was shopping for a treadmill, explaining that her whole family had gained weight after the holidays. She said they wanted to go to the gym, but time was limited, so they decided to buy a treadmill at home.
A sports store owner reported that sales of fitness equipment have increased significantly since the Spring Festival. While high-end items like treadmills remain popular, sales of ball-related products have doubled or even tripled. For example, badminton racket sales went from an average of five per day before the holiday to over ten per day now.
Online shops have also seen a surge in sales. One online seller mentioned that after the Spring Festival, demand for sports equipment has picked up, with treadmills selling over ten units in a short period.
Gyms Launch Promotions
With the post-holiday fitness boom, many gyms are taking advantage by running promotions. During the visit, reporters saw offers like 2.9-yuan trial sessions, discounted quarterly memberships, and personal training packages.
One gym in Huanggu District reduced its three-month membership fee from 1,400 to 949 yuan, plus three personal training sessions. A gym representative said that after the Spring Festival, the majority of members are young people, with spinning classes and yoga being the most popular.
Reporters visited several gyms in Shenyang and found that most are offering generous deals, though some promotions end this month. With the growing popularity of gyms, personal trainers are also in high demand. An industry source said that top trainers can charge up to 200 yuan per hour, and although expensive, they offer great value.
A personal trainer shared that many people attempt weight loss through dieting or excessive exercise, but some methods aren’t scientifically sound. Overdoing physical activity after a strict diet can lead to adverse effects like dizziness. Therefore, it’s recommended that people seek professional guidance when starting a fitness journey.
